Music
Intent
At Seymour Primary School, we believe that music is a universal language that encourages creativity and plays an integral role in helping children to feel part of a community. Therefore, our curriculum provides opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music both in class and to an audience. By the time they leave in Year 6, they will have an understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. Our aim is for children to develop curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of all types of music. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music and are able to link this to their own experiences.
How is this subject taught
At Seymour, we deliver the TKAT Music Curriculum, which has been carefully designed to reflect the National Curriculum, the Model Music Curriculum, and the latest OFSTED music review. Lessons provide children with regular opportunities to develop skills in listening and appraising, composing, and performing. These skills are explored through the key musical concepts of pulse, rhythm, pitch, structure, and notation.
Children progress in both singing and instrumental performance, with a focus on untuned percussion and glockenspiels, while also exploring a wider range of instruments. Through this approach, they gain confidence, creativity, and a deeper understanding of music across different styles and genres.
