British Values
At Seymour, we recognise the importance of educating our children about the wealth of diversity in Britain and our school.
We celebrate cultural/ethnic diversity through lessons, whole school events and assemblies. We promote British Values throughout our curriculum and extra curricular activities/experiences, as these values teach tolerance and respect for the differences in our community and wider world.
British Values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:
At Seymour we pride ourselves on our school’s diversity and believe it is vital to teach our children to respect everyone and celebrate the different beliefs, cultures and traditions people may have. Our curriculum encourages children to be curious about the world around them and to ask questions about different religions and cultures. Everyone at Seymour treats each other with respect as it is embedded through our school value of compassion. ‘We treat people how we want to be treated.’
The document below outlines how British Values are integrated into our whole school PSHE curriculum
Democracy starts on the first day of school. Every child has a voice at Seymour and we value their ideas and opinions on how to make our school the best place to be. The School Council Community meets regularly to share their class’ ideas and make important decisions on the day to day running of the school.
Children at Seymour learn the importance of law right from our Nursery. Children understand that laws govern and protect us and this is reinforced through our behaviour policy. Children are taught the value and reasons behind laws, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken within the school setting and the wider community.
As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our children to make choices safely, through a safe environment and empowering education. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advise how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it be through choice of challenge, or how they record, or participation in our extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, children are given the freedom to make choices.
British Values are a thread throughout our whole-school PSHE curriculum. Children learn directly about these values throughout different learning units.
