Safeguarding Curriculum
Safeguarding and the promotion of British Values are at the heart of our school’s ethos. We are committed to continually challenging our pupils to think critically about safeguarding issues and to develop a deep understanding of their own physical and mental wellbeing.
At our school, a key priority is identifying both structured and unstructured opportunities within the curriculum for pupils to learn about safeguarding.
Our unique curriculum and core values provide pupils with rich opportunities to experience life in all its diversity. Through this, they develop resilience, knowledge, understanding, and skills that positively impact their personal development, behaviour, welfare, and safety. We aim to equip every child with the awareness and confidence needed to take responsibility for their own personal safeguarding.
Our outdoor learning programme offers distinctive opportunities for pupils to learn about safety within our local environment, including how to recognise and manage risks effectively.
Our PSHE curriculum addresses a wide range of safeguarding themes, including:
-
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
-
Drugs, alcohol, and substance education
-
Anti-bullying and healthy relationships
-
Citizenship and health education
We deliver these topics sensitively, ensuring that more complex or personal issues are taught in an age-appropriate way, and where necessary, in small groups or on a 1:1 basis to meet individual needs.
Safeguarding is also embedded throughout the wider curriculum and enrichment opportunities, such as:
-
Safeguarding assemblies
-
Road and beach safety education (including school visits, Bikeability, and collaboration with local police officers)
-
Poolside and water safety through swimming lessons
-
Fire awareness sessions with the local fire service
-
Health and wellbeing talks from medical professionals
-
Visits from charities such as the NSPCC
-
Workshops from local voluntary organisations, particularly supporting safe transition to secondary school
-
Online safety education, including responsible use of social media
Online safety
Keeping our staff, pupils, and families safe online is a top priority at our school. Every class receives regular online safety education, and we host events throughout the year to raise awareness and promote responsible digital behaviour.
We use the Safer Schools App to support our staff, pupils, and wider school community. The app provides up-to-date safeguarding information and resources to help everyone stay informed about online safety. It is designed to educate and empower children both at school and at home, helping them make safer choices online. Through individual logins, pupils receive age-appropriate information, while parents can access practical tips and advice to help protect their children online.
The Safer Schools App can be downloaded from Google Play (for Android devices) or the App Store (for Apple devices). To get started, you will need a QR code and access code — available from the School Office. Separate QR codes are provided for staff, parents, and pupils.
Our school also uses Smoothwall to monitor and filter internet activity. Smoothwall alerts our Safeguarding Leads immediately to any concerns, ensuring a swift response to potential risks.
If you are worried about online sexual abuse or the way someone has been communicating with you online, please make a report to one of CEOP’s Child Protection Advisors via the CEOP website
