Physical Education

At Seymour Primary School, our ambitious PE curriculum supports children’s resilience, independence and confidence. It enables them to lead an active and healthy lifestyle; helping them to keep mentally and physically healthy. Our PE curriculum allows children to have the courage to try a wide range of sports and develop their fundamental physical, technical and tactical sporting skills. Through our team sports, children develop their ability to show compassion and gain leadership skills by learning to be part of a team or representing the school. Our aim is for our children to leave Seymour with the curiosity to take on a sport and become healthy life-long lovers of physical activity.

How is this subject taught:

At Seymour Primary School we use the REAL PE and REAL Gym curriculum to teach physical education. Real PE and Gym develops physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills alongside fundamental movement skills. It is taught through a multi skills approach rather than a sport first approach. This is because many children have not yet developed the core fundamental movement skills required to apply them to a traditional sport such as football or netball.

Real PE/Gym has two elements:

  • Multi Skills Cogs – Six different physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills. Each is the focus of one half term.

  • Fundamental Movement Skills (FUNS) – 12 core PE skills and 5 core Gym skills. The core skills are revisited, consolidated and developed progressively from Foundation Stage to Year 6.
