Maths Intent

‘Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.’

National curriculum 2014

At Seymour Primary school Maths is broken down into number, measurement, geometry and statistics. Within these areas, we teach place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, shape, position and direction, length/height, mass/weight, capacity/volume, time and statistics.

Our aim is that all children will leave us in Year 6 with the ability to:

  • fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry
  • justify or prove using mathematical language
  • solve problems by applying their mathematics

Maths Implementation

At Seymour Primary School we teach English through Mathematics Mastery. We teach daily maths lesson and maths meetings

Our mission is to ensure that every child can succeed in maths using a multifaceted approach founded in research, Mathematics Mastery. We aspire to make every child a problem solver through our three dimensions of depth;

  • language and communication
  • mathematical thinking
  • conceptual understanding

Children are taught to articulate, justify and explain their thinking, as individuals and collaboratively. They are given opportunities to explore, investigate and debate ideas using manipulatives and images.
